What is polished concrete?
The term polished concrete describes a decorative floor finish which leaves the concrete exposed as the final finish. Polished exposed aggregate finishes are achieved by grinding the surface of the slab to expose the aggregate or stones within the concrete or topping mix.

What is the process?
The first step involves grinding the concrete to reveal the aggregate within. The degree of uniformity of exposure needs to be specified. Once a satisfactory level of aggregate exposure is achieved, the concrete is polished using progressively finer grinding pads. Once polished, the final step is to apply a sealer.

Can I choose the aggregate for a new concrete slab?
Yes, if you are laying a new concrete slab. As well as selecting different cement colors in concrete, there are various aggregate colors, types, sizes and minerals to choose for the topping mix. You will need to discuss these options with your concrete supplier.

Can I color my polished concrete floor?
Yes, if you are laying a new slab, there are different cement colors to choose from, which you will need to discuss with your concrete supplier.

How do I achieve a uniform aggregate finish?
The uniformity of the finished floor is determined by the distribution of the aggregate in the concrete.

What options are available if I have an old concrete slab?
Depending on the state and level of damage to the concrete floor, the option is to grind and polish the concrete. The overall look will depend upon the type of concrete MPa of the slab and the aggregate density.

What sealers are applied?
This depends on the finish required and also the varying parameters of the floor.

How much does polished concrete cost?
The price varies according to the condition of the slab, the size of the area, the level of grinding required, the aggregate exposure desired and the final finishing sealer. Polished concrete is a cost effective alternative comparable to timber, tiles, carpet, vinyl, pavers, stencil crete etc. Prices to suit your particular project are available on inquiry.

When should I consult a concrete polisher?
At the very earliest planning stage is best and can provide cost benefits to the client.

Is a polished concrete floor slippery for outdoors?
No, the surface can be made non slip, e.g. pool and outdoor entertaining areas.

Do I have to have the exposed aggregate look?
No, the degree of grinding can give different degrees of stone/aggregate showing in the final finish. If required, the look of no stone at all can be obtained.

Is polished concrete “green”?
“The best green material is no material,” stated a L.E.E.D. instructor. A polished concrete floor consumes far fewer resources to produce and maintain, than one covered with an additional flooring product or coating

Polished concrete can contribute to the reduction of energy consumption by increasing the amount of natural light entering an interior space due to its high light reflectively thereby reducing the internal loads of interior “regulated (non-process)” lighting. And there is more….

Polished concrete can reduce the amount of construction waste during a major renovation because the concrete floor structure can be renewed without demolishing the existing floor therefore reducing waste deposits in landfills.

Polished concrete floors are a great way to reduce allergies caused by dust mites.

We believe that inside every concrete slab old or new there is a beautiful polished concrete floor just waiting to come out. The glossy concrete surface is not just aesthetically pleasing – it brings a host of other benefits too.
